Please note, as stated in the letter you received acknowledging receipt of your appeal, we are currently experiencing a significant volume of work. Therefore, it will take up to 30 weeks for your appeal to be completed.
We are currently processing appeals received before 20 November 2012. We are doing all we can to manage our appeals work effectively and apologise for any delay you may experience.
You may be able to appeal if you have made a complaint about the police and you are not happy with the outcome.
On 22 November 2012 changes were made to the police complaints system which affect the way your appeal is handled. These changes, which were part of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act, mean that how your appeal will be dealt with depends on when the appropriate authority received your original complaint.
The appropriate authority can be:
the chief officer of the police force (usually the chief constable)
the Police and Crime Commissioner responsible for the police force you complained about
the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (if your complaint is about the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service)
the Common Council for the City of London (if your complaint is about the Commissioner of the City of London police).
For more information about recent changes to the police complaints system, please contact us.
If the police force dealing with your complaint received it before 22 November 2012, your appeal will be handled under a different system. All the information you need to appeal is available here.
