On 12 October the IPCC announced it would be launching an independent investigation into allegations surrounding the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster. This follows our review of the Hillsborough Independent Panel’s report.

This investigation will review allegations surrounding amendments to statements, the actions of the police officers after the disaster and the role of West Midlands Police and those who investigated what happened at the time.

We have received referrals from West Yorkshire Police Authority in relation to Sir Norman Bettison, South Yorkshire Police in relation to the events before, during and after 15 April 1989, and West Midlands Police in relation to their role in the investigation of events.
