Between 1 April 2004, when the IPCC began work, and 30 November 2008, 17 members of the public have been shot and killed by the police service in England and Wales, plus one police officer. In addition, nine people have been injured, including two police staff.
Of the 17 people killed, nine were shot by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). Of the nine injured, four were in the MPS area.
