Nick Hardwick
Nick Hardwick was appointed as the first Chair of the Independent Police Complaints Commission in December 2002.
Prior to his appointment, Nick was Chief Executive of the Refugee Council from 1995 to 2003 - the largest refugee agency in Europe. He was Chair of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles from 1999 to 2003. He has also been a member of the Social Security Advisory Committee, the Prince's Trust Ethnic Minorities Advisory Group and the Holocaust Memorial Day Steering Group.
From 1986-1995, Nick worked as Chief Executive of Centrepoint – a charity and housing association for young homeless people. During his time at Centrepoint, Nick was seconded to the Department of the Environment for six months to advise the Housing Minister on the implementation of the Government's Rough Sleepers Initiative.
Nick has also worked for the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO) from 1980 to 1986. He held a number of positions in NACRO's Youth Training Section including a period from 1984 to 1986 where he was based in Wolverhampton and responsible for a group of training schemes in the West Midlands.
Nick has a BA (Hons) from Hull University in English Literature and has an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences from the University of Wolverhampton.
