Nicholas Long

Nicholas Long has responsibility for IPCC oversight of Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Police together with United Kingdom Borders Agency (UKBA). Additionally he leads for the Commission on International Liaison and also Public Order, Restraint and the 2012 Olympics. Until 2008 he led on Custody issues.  Prior to joining the IPCC in 2003 Nicholas had a career as a surveyor mostly in private practice after a few years in the Merchant Navy as a seaman.

He has a longstanding interest in human rights and criminal justice issues and has acted as a volunteer adviser and trustee of numerous organisations. He also has an active interest in civil oversight of the police, which he has developed over the last 25 years, with roles including lay visitor to police stations in Lambeth , trustee of NACRO and chair for a number of organisations including the Community-Police Consultative Group for Lambeth. Nicholas was a founding member and Chair of the Metropolitan Police Operation Trident Independent Advisory Group and was a member of the London Crimestoppers Board.

For his services to the community and the police in Lambeth, he was appointed MBE in 2001. Nicholas has contributed to a number of published reports pertaining to policing methods. He was an independent member of the Metropolitan Police Authority until 2004, where he was the deputy chair of the Finance Committee.
