Introduction to the IPCC

We are responsible for increasing public confidence in the police complaints system and work with representatives from across the community to improve access to the system and ensure that lessons are learned from complaints to improve policing overall.

As well as our involvement in the police complaints system, we also investigate serious complaints against the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), HM Revenue and Customs and the UK Border Agency.

Our casework and investigations staff investigate the most serious complaints, allegations of misconduct and deaths or cases of serious injury caused by the police or other agencies. They also deal with appeals against the way that police have recorded, resolved or investigated complaints against themselves.

The IPCC is organised into a number of directorates and departments. See the IPCC organisation chart.
