Witness Appeals
IPCC seeks witnesses to an incident outside the Bridgewater Hall
The Independent Police Complaints Commission is seeking witnesses to an incident outside the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester on Monday 5 May.
The IPCC is managing an investigation into Greater Manchester Police’s handling of the incident.
Greater Manchester Police officers were investigating a group of men who had driven up to the Bridgewater Hall when an altercation developed between the officers and members of the public who were leaving a community event which had been held at the venue.
Allegations have been made that the officers used excessive force when dealing with the incident.
Ms Naseem Malik, IPCC Commissioner for the North West, said: “It is clear this incident has impacted upon Greater Manchester Police’s community relations and it is important that the IPCC provides independent and impartial oversight to the investigation. We will ensure the investigation is thorough and determines the exact circumstances of the incident and whether action taken by the officers was justified and proportionate.
“It is important that as much evidence as possible is captured to assist the investigation and I would appeal to anybody who witnessed or recorded the incident to contact the IPCC. We will ensure the evidence is treated confidentially where appropriate, collated, and fed into the investigation.”
Anybody who witnessed, or who recorded footage of, the incident can contact the IPCC via telephone on 0800 096 9079 or via e-mail on bridgewater.hall@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.
