South Yorkshire Police officers have pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving following an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation

Two South Yorkshire Police officers have pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving following an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation. Both have been fined and disqualified from driving for a period of 8 months.
Detective Constable Anthony Hilliard Perkins, 53, and Police Constable Paul Jason Salvesen, 40, were charged with dangerous driving and careless driving. The guilty plea to careless driving was accepted by the CPS and the Recorder of Leeds, Justice Collier on Friday 12
th
August 2011.
PC Salversen was fined £400 and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 8 months with immediate effect.
DC Perkins was fined £500 and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 8 months with immediate effect.
The charges relate to an incident on 30 April 2010 in which two unmarked South Yorkshire Police cars were in collision with a Seat Alhambra people carrier on the northbound carriageway of the M1 near to junction 34.
A woman and four children who were travelling in the people carrier were taken to hospital. One of the children, an 11-year-old boy, sustained serious head injuries, while the woman sustained a serious arm injury and one of the other children sustained a broken leg and internal injuries. The two police officers sustained minor injuries.
The IPCC independently investigated the incident after it was referred by South Yorkshire Police.
IPCC Commissioner Nicholas Long said, "The evidence presented by IPCC investigators following an independent investigation was such that the officers pleaded at a very early stage. The fact that these two officers have pleaded guilty to these driving offences, thus sparing a family of the ordeal of a trial should be noted. The IPCC continues to work with forces across England and Wales, and with ACPO to improve practices and work towards a drop in the number of police related traffic incidents.”
