IPCC managed investigation update: Witness appeal in relation to fatal RTI in Greater Manchester

A fresh appeal for witnesses is being launched two weeks after a fatal road traffic collision in Greater Manchester which resulted in the death of a 38-year-old woman.

Angela Purcell, from Swinton, died after a Greater Manchester Police van was in collision with a Seat Ibiza car in which she was a passenger. The collision occurred at the junction of Green Lane and Cromwell Road in Patricroft at approximately 3:50pm on Friday 20 June 2008.

The Greater Manchester Police van was responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision. The police van was travelling along Green Lane when it was in collision with the Seat Ibiza which was turning onto Green Lane from Cromwell Road.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is managing the Greater Manchester Police investigation into the incident.

IPCC Commissioner Ms Naseem Malik said: “My sympathies go out to Ms Purcell’s family and friends for their tragic loss. This was a traumatic incident for everyone involved and it is important that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine what happened. I urge anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist the inquiry.”
