IPCC Submits Jean Charles de Menezes Investigation File to CPS

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has submitted its investigation report into the fatal shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and a full file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) today (19 January).

The IPCC has also provided a copy of the report only to HM Coroner, John Sampson, and as required by law, the Metropolitan Police Authority and the Metropolitan Police Service. The legislation also gives the IPCC discretion to submit a copy to the Home Secretary in grave and exceptional circumstances. It has done so.

The IPCC has a duty to keep families informed of progress of an investigation, subject to a harm test. We are currently in detailed discussions with Jean Charles’ family to arrange to update them in the way most helpful to them. The family will be provided with a copy of the investigation report when legal considerations permit us to do so.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) carried out an independent inquiry into the shooting which was led by Senior IPCC Investigator, John Cummins, and overseen by Nick Hardwick, Chair of the IPCC.

It would be inappropriate to comment further on this case at this stage.

A separate investigation by the IPCC into a complaint from the family of Mr de Menezes continues.

Notes to Editors:

The IPCC will not be giving any media interviews regarding this matter.
