North London death in custody – name correction and witness appeal

Further investigations by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have revealed that the correct name of the man who died Sunday 11 May in north London was Ayodeji Awogboro.

Mr Awogboro was arrested just after midday. Metropolitan Police Service officers in a marked police car attempted to stop his black Vauxhall Corsa that they had observed travelling through a red light on Seven Sisters Road, N7. The vehicle failed to stop and officers pursued it.

The Corsa drove down Isledon Road before coming to a halt in Parkside Crescent, Holloway. Mr Awogboro ran from the scene and into a nearby park where he was arrested. He  was taken to Islington Police Station and became unwell on arrival. Officers administered first aid and the London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called. Mr Awogboro was taken to a London hospital where he died at 11.22pm.

IPCC Commissioner for north west London David Petch said:

"I would appeal for anybody who was in the park between 12.15 and 12.30 pm on Sunday lunchtime and who witnessed him being chased or arrested to call the IPCC. He was 5' 6" tall.  We should also like to speak with anybody who saw the Corsa being pursued along Seven Sisters Road, Isledon Road or  Parkside Crescent.

"Witnesses should call freephone 0800 096 9073 or email islington.incident@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.  We depend on witnesses helping us to ensure our investigations are as thorough as possible," said David Petch.
