Police complaints statistics
Custody and detention
The custody environment presents a range of challenges for forces, especially when they need to detain vulnerable people. It is vital that thorough risk assessments are carried out on people coming into custody to ensure that they are treated appropriately and receive any support they need.
Use of force and armed policing
In line with the UK’s tradition of policing by consent, the public has the right to expect police officers to be accountable when they use force, particularly if it leads to a death or serious injury.
Corruption and abuse of power
Police forces must refer allegations of serious corruption to us. We then assess whether it is appropriate for us to carry out an investigation.
Welfare and vulnerable people
The police service plays a vital role in protecting vulnerable people and ensuring that those at risk of abuse, and those who have been abused, receive protection and support.
Discrimination
As part of our role to set the standards that police should follow when they handle complaints, we report on how allegations of discrimination are investigated.
Death and serious injuries
When someone dies following contact with the police, the force involved must refer the matter to us to assess whether we should investigate what has happened.
Focus
Focus gives police force professional standards departments (PSDs) practical guidance on dealing with complaints, conduct matters, and death or serious injury cases. It supports police complaint handling and improves standards.
Please note that issues 1 to 8 inclusive and issues 10 and 11 relate to complaints and conduct matters that came to the attention of the appropriate authority before the 1 February 2020. They should not be relied upon for new legislation cases.
